This Saturday, July 12, the Oneonta Farmers Market will hold its annual grill day event, featuring free samples of locally-raised foods hot off the grill, great BBQ recipe ideas, a free drawing and display by Latte Lounge, balloon give-aways, and live music with Heaven’s Back Door. The event is sponsored by Latte Lounge

Visit the manager’s table to try hot-off-the-grill free samples of chorizo and sweet Italian sausage by Stone & Thistle Farm made with grass-fed pork from their East Meredith farm. Pick up a free recipe for this delicious, easy to make meal, perfect for outdoor grilling, or purchase a copy of Otsego County’s local foods cookbook ‘From Farm To Table’. A portion of proceeds from book sales go to support the Oneonta Farmers’ Market’s special events program.

The sponsor’s table will feature a display by Latte Lounge, Oneonta’s favorite coffee shop, with information about their delicious menu offerings, including coffees, teas, desserts, bagels and freshly made salads and sandwiches. Enter a free noon-time drawing to win a $20 gift certificate from the Latte Lounge.

Live music at the event begins at 10am with Heaven’s Back Door, playing acoustic blues and jazz standards with some fun originals mixed in. Balloons are free for the asking and the children’s table will feature fun games and activities for the young and the young at heart.

This week’s vendors will offer a wide selection of fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, broccoli, radishes, greens, beets, summer squash, strawberries, peas, potatoes, onions, garlic scapes, carrots, and more.  Visit Mulligan Creek Acres booth or Stone & Thistle Farm booth for poultry and farm fresh eggs.  The market will also have various cuts of locall-raised meats and sausage, cut flower bouquets, potted plants, homemade preserves, homemade granola, honey and gourmet baked goods including gluten free, and handmade crafts.
Authorized produce vendors accept WIC and Senior Coupons throughout the season. The Oneonta Farmers’ Market is held every Saturday from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm at Oneonta’s Main Street Plaza under the white canopies right in front of the Clarion Hotel. Rain or shine! For more information call 607-437-0158, visit www.OneontaFarmersMarket.com, or ‘like’ us on facebook.

On Wednesday July 9 and Wednesday July 16, the Greater Oneonta Historical Society is offering “Main Street Memories Walks”.
A couple years back we found that these informal and leisurely walks were a great opportunity to reminisce about the past, but also
reflect on the present, and propose ideas for the future. The July 9 walk will cover Main Street east of Dietz Street and the July 16
walk Main Street west of Dietz.

I hope that you join us for one or both of the walks. Meet in front of the Oneonta History Center at 7:00 PM for the hour-long walks.
It’s free.

Thanks for considering it.

Bob

Herbal Remedies at The Farmers’ Museum during Step Back in Time Weekend

Step Back in Time Weekend: Herbal Remedies

July 12-13, 2014, from 10 am–5 pm

Cooperstown, NY — July 4, 2014 — Discover the plants and herbs that keep us happy and healthy at The Farmers’ Museum on Saturday and Sunday, July 12-13. During Step Back in Time: Herbal Remedies Weekend, learn about patent medicines and ingredients to make home remedies, take a workshop, and tour the herb garden with our expert.

Roll up your sleeves and make your own herbal sachet, or perhaps grind herbs to be used to prepare medicine. In the blacksmith shop, watch laboratory equipment take shape.

Workshops will be highlights of the weekend. On Saturday at 1:00 pm, learn to improve your wellness and nutrition from Marguerite Uhlmann-Bower, herbalist, R.N., and outdoors educator of Weeds, Leaves, Seeds & Shoots, a nature-oriented wellness program with workshops on wild-crafting and wild foods foraging.

The workshop on Sunday at 1:00 pm is “Herbal Allies for the Dog Days of Summer,” featuring common plants that help ease the insect bites, sunburns, cuts, and rashes of summer (led by Judith Millar, herbalist, Sacred Ground Herbals).

Life in 1845 continues throughout the museum’s historic village and farmstead. Don’t miss the Empire State Carousel, the museum you can ride, and the Children’s Barnyard with its baby sheep, goats, and other animals.

Herbal Remedies Weekend is a way to experience history first-hand at the museum, bringing the past to life and enriching our lives today. The weekend is sponsored by Cooperstown Natural Foods and NBT Bank.

All Step Back in Time Weekends are held at the museum from 10:00 am–5:00 pm. Entry is included in the museum admission: Adults and juniors (13-64): $12.00; seniors (65+): $10.50; youth (7-12): $6.00; children (6 and under): Free. NYSHA members are always admitted free, as are active-duty and retired career military.  Through Labor Day, active-duty military and up to five family members are free, through the Blue Star Museum program.
