Oneonta Native Joseph ‘Reveals Broadway’ at Hartwick Exhibit
ONEONTA, NY—Hartwick College’s Foreman Gallery presents Broadway Revealed: Behind the Theater Curtain, an exhibit showcasing some of Broadway’s most critically acclaimed productions, by renowned photographer Stephen Joseph. The exhibit opens with a reception, attended by Joseph, on Sunday, June 9 at 3 p.m. Broadway Revealed runs through August 11, and is free and open to the public. Donations are accepted.
An Oneonta native, Joseph is a distinguished landscape photographer based in the San Francisco Bay area. He is best known for signature landscape panoramas, and his photographic essays composed of 360° views elevate his work to the level of fine art. His book, “Oneonta 360” (Argian Press), is a celebratory homage to his hometown.
“Hartwick is pleased to provide this wonderful exhibit for the benefit of Oneonta’s art loving community,” said Hartwick College President Margaret L. Drugovich. “Stephen Joseph’s colorful and interesting work can be enjoyed by anyone interested in the life of the theatre and beautiful photography.”
Photographed over an eight-year period, Broadway Revealed offers a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into creating some of the most well-known theatrical productions, including “Chicago,” “American Idiot,” “Hair,” and “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.”
“My Broadway Revealed project includes images of set designers, costume designers, lighting designers and all of the creative people that produce Broadway shows,” Joseph said. “Also included are all of the shops, such as costume shops, wig maker studios, shoe makers and prop shops. Every aspect of what it takes to produce a Broadway play.”
Debuting in December, 2012, Broadway Revealed has been featured in galleries across the country, including the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in Lincoln Center.
An eponymous book featuring photographs from the exhibit was published in 2015.
His public photographic installations have been featured in homes, nonprofits, and office buildings throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, including Kaiser Permanente, John Muir Medical Center, Bishop Ranch San Ramon, and California Plaza Walnut Creek, and his photographs adorn every guest room of the Majestic Yosemite Hotel in Yosemite National Park. Select photographs are also on permanent display at his gallery in Alamo, CA.
Joseph is currently photographing “behind the scenes” at The Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown. “I’m excited to bring this collection of images to Hartwick College and share this work with the Oneonta community,” he said. “If you didn’t see Broadway Revealed at Lincoln Center, you can see it in Oneonta this summer.” Broadway Revealed: Behind the Theater Curtain will be open Thursday to Sunday, from 2 – 8 p.m. This program is presented by Hartwick College with support from the Greater Oneonta Historical Society.
