2014 Career Fair

Thursday, October 30, 2014

Set up from 8:00 am – 8:45 am
Career Fair from 9:00 am – 12 pm

Holiday Inn, State Route 23, Oneonta

Developing career ready graduates creates a pathway for our youth to be successful.  The Otsego County Chamber believes that retaining young people in our region after they graduate, either for employment or post-secondary education, is critical to the economic vitality of our region.

The Otsego County Chamber will hold its first Career Expo for 8th, 9th and 10th grade students onThursday, October 30, 2014 at the Holiday Inn of Oneonta.  The purpose of the Career Expo is to provide a well-rounded depiction of career opportunities in our region, the jobs that may be available to them when they graduate and the education and skills need to acquire those jobs.

Business exhibitors will provide information to students about the various career opportunities at their company, the training and education needed for those careers, average salaries, and how students can acquire the skills, education, and experience needed to pursue these opportunities.

Several colleges from our region will also be present to share information on how their degree and certificate programs relate to the various career opportunities presented. Colleges will be paired with business sectors at the Expo so that students can see a connection between the careers in our region and the educational opportunities also available in our region.

We are inviting local schools to bring a group of 8th, 9th, and/or 10th graders to the Career Expo.  The Expo will be from 9:00 am – 12:00 p.m. and we will stagger the arrival times of the participating schools so that we have will have a continuous flow of participants. The reader-friendly format includes fact-packed features, profiles, quizzes, and photographs.

Pauline Bartel is an award-winning writer who has been a devoted “Windie” since the age of 16, when she first saw the film with her mother. YEA LOGO hi res

embrace your passion                                                         live your dream                                                                   change the world

YEA! is Coming to TOWN

The Otsego County Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to be bringing the Young Entrepreneurs Academy to TOWN.  YEA! teaches students in grades GRADES 7th-12thhow to start and run their own REAL businesses.

A bit of background…

YEA! was developed at the University of Rochester in 2004 with the support of a grant from the Kauffman Foundation.  The Otsego County Chamber is excited to be introducing YEA! to the Otsego County Community!

YEA! guides middle and high school students through the process of starting and running a legitimate business or social movement over the course of a full academic year. YEA! has graduated almost 600 students over the past 7 years, who have started almost 450 businesses and social movements!  Kids start as students, and graduate as CEOs!

Over the course of the program students:

  • Brainstorm business ideas
  • Write a business plan
  • Interact with business professionals
  • Pitch their business plan to potential “investors” (think Shark Tank meets the Apprentice meets American Idol)
  • Obtain funding
  • Legally register their businesses
  • Participate in a Trade Show
  • Actually launch their own businesses or social movements

YEA! offers students the chance to:

  • Develop the skills necessary to launch their own business or social movement (hands-on entrepreneurial experience!)
  • Learn about real businesses – why they succeed or fail.
  • Hear from local entrepreneurs.
  • Launch their own business or social movement!
  • Become more confident in their ideas and their abilities.

How business professionals can get involved…

Through their interactions with business professionals during the year, YEA! students gain some of the most important knowledge and experience they need to succeed. Local professionals volunteer their time and expertise as guest speakers, mentors, investors, graphic designers, field trip hosts, business plan reviewers, and much more. The time YEA! students spend with adults who encourage their futures is invaluable, and participants often report getting even more out of their participation than they put in to it!

For more information, on how to enroll a student and how to volunteer call Barbara Ann Heegan, President & CEO at (607) 432-4500 Ext. 202 or email info@otsegocc.com.
